The New York Knicks have added more firepower to their roster with the addition of former MVP Derrick Rose. They have exchanged point guard Dennis Smith Jr. and a second-round draft pick to the Detroit Pistons in order to obtain the seasoned veteran.
This marks Rose’s second stint in the Mecca and reunites him again with his former head coach Tom Thibodeau. Rose was the youngest ever MVP in his time with the Chicago Bulls under Thibodeau’s leadership in 2011. This illustrates the third time in Rose’s career that he has played under Thibodeau’s system. Thibodeau was Rose’s coach when Rose was a rookie and during his MVP campaign in Chicago and for two seasons as a part of the Minnesota Timberwolves.
It is understandable why the Knicks would seek out the former All-Star point guard. The Knicks this year, have surprised everyone in the league and are in playoff contention. With the addition of Rose, the Knicks have a seasoned veteran in the league who can guide and mentor the younger players on the team. Rose also brings additional scoring, explosive abilities, and shot creation to the team. Rose makes a bigger Knicks threat to other playoff contenders.
The Knicks are an already improving team with Julius Randle coming into his own and becoming an All-Star this year averaging 23.2 Points, 11 Rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game. The arrival of Rose has turned heads, have helped the Knicks’ playoff chances and is overall a good trade agreed upon by everyone.
