West Side Story Adaptation

Silas Gonzalez ’24

Directed by the notorious Academy Award winner Steven Speilberg, a revitalized classic musical of love stuck between ferocious gang rivalries set in 1957 New York is born.  Starring actors and actresses on the rise such as Rachel Zegler (Maria), Ansel Elgort (Tony), Ariana DeBose (Anita), Mike Faist (Riff), David Alverez (Bernando), and many more exciting choices.  The official trailer was released September 15th, showcasing uniquely captivating cinematography by Daniel L. Fapp.  Cult-classic songs Mambo and America return with exciting and enchanting choreography by Justin Peck.

For those who have never heard of this musical, the plot revolves around the relationship between Maria, the sister of gang leader Bernando, and Tony, the childhood friend of another gang leader Riff.  As Bernando and Riff partake in a fierce conflict, Maria and Tony fall into a hopeless romance trying to separate themselves from this binding battle.  West Side Story is a perfect blend of such tension and romantic ease.  Personally, I cannot wait for the remake’s release on December 10th.
